The News Editor, States will play a key role in shaping our coverage of power and politics outside Washington — working closely with journalists in state capitals across the country to surface smart scoops, elevate sharp analysis and deliver indispensable daily Playbook newsletters.

This is a hands-on editing role for someone who thrives on variety. You’ll help steer newsletter coverage, collaborate with editors across the newsroom to spot trends in the states and lead a small group of reporters covering politics and government from the ground up. The ideal candidate brings strong editorial judgment, an eye for distinctive angles and the ability to move quickly and cleanly through copy.

  • Collaborate with editors across the newsroom to identify storylines with regional or national significance.
  • Deliver a regular mix of quick-turn items, competitive scoops and smart enterprise stories.
  • Help maintain high standards of clarity, urgency and insight in our state-based coverage.
  • Edit and assign stories for both POLITICO’s broader readership and its professional subscriber audience on POLITICO Pro.
  • Offer guidance and feedback to reporters of varying experience levels, helping them sharpen their work and deepen their sourcing.

What You'll Need

  • Extremely high news metabolism and the ability to track local and regional storylines across the country.
  • A curious mind and an endless well of story ideas.
  • Strong line editing skills and experience working in a fast-paced newsroom.
  • Sound editorial judgment and a sharp sense for what drives political coverage at both the local and national level.
  • Familiarity with state politics or a proven ability to learn new terrains quickly.
  • A collaborative approach to working across teams, bureaus and coverage areas.
  • Ability to manage tight deadlines and balance competing demands.
  • A rigorous commitment to fair-minded, nonpartisan journalism.
